Ithemba Center was established in 2009 by Nomathemba Madlala. Initially Ithemba Center lacked proper facilities, and Nomathemba started providing her services through visiting the children at their homes in Protea Glen (Soweto). Nomathemba, together with one staff member, maintained contact with 45 children (aged 4-20 years) and their parents/caregivers in this way until early 2011. Due to the SEEtrust partnership proper facilities for Ithemba Center were found in March. Ithemba Center is now running an afterschool programme at the Luyolo Primary School (Soweto), receiving 30 children on a daily basis. A play therapist works once a week with these children, providing them with much needed psycho-social guidance. At the moment two Dutch sponsors provide Nomathemba with the money needed to cover six months of operating expenses.

Business development

  • Short-term: to become financially independent of the current sponsorship: to find local South African sponsors and ensure their commitment, and to develop other ways of generating income
  • Long-term: to grow the current capacity of the organisation: to grow from 30 to 60 children at the current location, and to open similar afterschool programmes at other schools
